Oddly crunchy
Admittedly, Fort Royal opens a little rough. Unusual for a scent based mostly on a benzoin accord. It has a crunchy texture, almost like toffee or peanut brittle. Except it isn't really "sweet" until the drydown, when the bark-like texture smooths out into a slightly smoky vanilla. Even at that phase, its thick and goo...

Underrated
I personally do not get much anise, and certainly don't find this akin to Lolita Lempicka. Ellen takes a "classic" (i.e., old-fashioned) scent profile (rich fruits, heady florals, oriental-amber) and sort of dumbs it down for a younger crowd. Think Tresor for teenagers. There's cotton candy here, for goodness sake. Min...

Another surprise
As with Sweet Amber from the same line, I am pleasantly surprised by Electric Purple. This is everything we all want Amethyst to be: brighter berries, more aromatic, and better performing. I get juicy berries, mint, violet leaves, currant, moss, and patchouli, in that order. Perfectly balanced. This has that classic "b...

MMMM oud
Delicious, tart but jammy oud and resins. Burgundy velvet. Oud is here for sure but is so well-blended with the peru balsam it just ends up rich, woody, and creamy on the skin. I also get an amazing hazelnut latte accord. The perfect chef's kiss of fruits here to keep this from going too dark. Feels very gothic, romant...

Great drydown
Starts off pretty aromatic and almost fresh. Bright lights. In the heart, a clean, dry oud. Nothing animalic or skanky here. Finally, in the drydown, the beautiful honeyed amber comes through. Warm, sweet, and with classic Rem. patchouli. Not too heavy, though. Stays airy and transparent throughout. At first, felt a li...

Costus heaven
Man, if you love costus, Magie Sexualle has it in spades. The only other fragrance I've known to have this much delicious, powdery, & animalic musk was the Jane-Birkin-inspired L'air de Rien by Miller Harris. In fact, MS is similar except it lacks LdR's bright neroli and vanilla base. Magie Sexualle also has a magical...

Finally!
Been working my way through the Matin collection over the years. The OG Serge L'Eau is nice, but a bit too 90s freshie for me. Dans le Bleu Qui Pétille is also nice, but a little too unmaintained swimming pool, funky mineral, and way too cloying. Parole d'Eau, my second fave, is fresh like a smack in the face with a pi...
