A very beautiful floral from the nineties, but a dated classic nonetheless.

Samsara is an iconic perfume from thirty years ago, designed by Jean-Paul Guerlain and Gérard Anthony. It still stays elegant and current, by optimizing and limiting the number of notes used. Chanel No. 5, which has a similar olfactory pyramid, also uses the same strategy. A similar smelling Arpege from Lanvin is less...

A very forgettable white floral - underwhelming and expensive

This review of Joyeuse Tubéreuse from the Guerlain L’Art & La Matière collection is based on a sample atomizer from Guerlain. The designers behind Joyeuse Tubéreuse are Thierry Wasser and Delphine Jelk, the creative co-directors of perfumes at Guerlain. Joyeuse Tubéreuse is playing in a very crowded field of green, whi...

Sweet and medicinal - Great value!

Afnan Supremacy in Oud is supposedly a clone of Initio Oud for Greatness. I would call it “inspired by” the Initio scent, as these two perfumes are not identical. This review is based on a bottle I got from Jomashop. I have no regrets even after testing this side-by-side with the original. Supremacy in Oud has all the...

A lovely citrus with aromatic notes of basil and myrtle, though nothing exceptional

Mirto di Panarea exemplifies the modus operandi of Acqua di Parma for making fresh citrus perfumes in the Blu Mediterraneo collection, which are named after various location around the Tyrrhenian Sea.  The perfumes differ in the aromatic notes on the top and woody, resins at the bottom.  But they are all anchored by a...

A beautiful leathery incense with floral notes.

Garcon Manque comes from the La Collection Particulière, the private collection from Givenchy. A hotel particulier is a private lodging, something like a grand townhouse with an enclosed garden. YouTube has many videos on the residences of Hubert de Givenchy. La Collection Particulière is inspired by Hubert de Givenchy...

A good representation of white champaca, hampered by mediocre performance

Magnolia Alba is a nice floral fragrance from Chloé Atelier des Fleures. According to Chloé, the perfumer Louise Turner “transcribes” the rich lemony floral notes of the magnolias from her native England. Unfortunately, there are no magnolias native to England. So, it must have been an ornamental magnolia of unknown or...

A good daily-wear perfume with some interesting notes.

This review is from a sample of 902 Armagnac, blond tobacco, cinnamon that I bought from Bon Parfumeur. I bought 09 primarily for the armagnac and tobacco notes. It is nice but not really exceptional. I would consider it if I can get it at the $40-$50 range for 100 ml. The opening has a good orange note mixed with a sh...

An adorable fig-leaf and rose perfume from Dior and Francis Kurkdjian

Dioriviera is my first contact with the La Collection Privée Christian Dior, though I had sniffed some of them on paper strips in a large luxury department store in UK. Obviously, this strategy often leads to hasty conclusions. Fortunately, La Collection Privée Christian Dior is available in smaller 7.5 ml bottles, whi...

An outstanding pistachio-rose gourmand with few parallels.

Atelier Materi was founded in 2019 by Veronique Le Bihan, using the same organizing principles as Frederic Malle. She supplies the vision behind each perfume, and individual perfumers crystallize this idea into a perfume. The house “draws its inspiration from the raw beauty of materials and the meticulous gestures that...

A beautiful mysterious resinous-fruity-floral perfume from Mathilde Laurent.

This review is based on a full bottle of La Panthere Parfum that I bought in 2024 from a US grey market seller as a gift to my daughter. The iconic panther head adorns the bottle, a motif that comes from Cartier’s panther line of jewelry. Yesterday, I had worn Pasha de Cartier, which inspired me to try another perfume...
